Meet the team

Most customers will be familiar with James McMahon who has been providing collectionHQ technical support since 2012. We caught up with James to find out what his average day working at collectionHQ’s Headquarters in Glasgow looks like and much more.

How would you describe an average day in the life of an Implementation and Support Engineer at collectionHQ?

In general I spend my mornings dealing with support queries, digging through mounds of data attempting to figure out the answers to customer’s questions. Bugging the developers about all the nooks and crannies of collectionHQ’s finer details and passing on my findings.

In the afternoons, implementations take over and I can be digging through mounds of data attempting to figure out whether what the customer has indicated matches what we see in the actual data (not saying they are often wrong – but sometimes reality and perceptions can differ wildly….).

Generally I spend a lot of time digging through data…

What is your favourite book of all time?

Oh, I couldn’t choose just one. There’s so many. In no particular order, anything by Peter F. Hamilton, Edward Rutherfurd, Conn Iggulden, Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow, Stephen Baxter, Jean M. Auel  and of course the late great Terry Pratchett. Currently I’m in the middle of the 13th part of the Arisen series by Michael Stephen Fuchs/Glynn James – difficult to beat good Zombie fiction as well. J

But, one book that I always thought was very well written though a bit dated now given its 1940’s setting is Earth Abides by George R Stewart.  If you read one novel this year – make it that one.

There might be a theme to the novels I like…

If you were stuck on a desert island, what 3 things would you bring?

Eh? How’d I end up here?  That’s so unlike me. Well, let’s make sure I’ve got my e-book reader of choice, a satellite phone and the phone number of the nearest cruise ship. May as well go home in style!

What do you love most about public libraries?

Did you know there is a library with its own Minecraft server for its patrons? Things like that are what I love the most. The days of libraries only being about books are long since past….
